Bradley Beal was just starting to find his footing in Los Angeles. Now an injury that has been deemed a fluke by doctors has brought a premature end to his first season with the Clippers.
The Clippers announced on Wednesday that Brad will undergo surgery next week to repair a hip fracture suffered in the team’s game against Phoenix over the weekend. Return to play timeline after such a surgery is 6-9 months, which means Brad will not play again for Los Angeles this season. Clippers President of Basketball Operations Lawrence Frank announced the results but the team believes Brad will make a full recovery and be ready to go for next season. He signed a two-year contract with the Clippers over the summer.
“This is a very, very fluky injury,” Frank said. “The surgeon said it’s almost like the equivalent of if you were in like a car accident. It’s an atypical kind of basketball injury. It’s more of an acute trauma-type injury.”
The injury occurred in the third quarter as Brad attempted to draw a charge. An awkward fall forced him to leave the game and he did not return. Imaging revealed the fracture and doctors determined surgery was the only course of action.
“It’s tough for our guys to hear about this,” Clippers coach Tyronn Lue said, “especially from a guy that’s a great guy and tried everything he could to get back on the floor.”
After two seasons with the Suns, Brad reached a contract buyout in Phoenix and entertained several offers before deciding to join the Clippers. The team was easing him into the lineup and through six games he was averaging 20 minutes, 8.2 points and 1.7 assists per game. He called 12 points and three assists against Phoenix, including eight points in the third, before being forced to leave the game.
“He feels like he’s let us down by being hurt. He feels horrible he’s not there for his teammates,” Frank said. “He was hoping to have a really, really good year.”
